I am a paper book person, so much so that until this year I have never read an electronic book or listened to an audio version. And it wasn't just because we didn't had these alternatives for as long as people in other parts of the world (I live in Europe), it's just I love the paper books so much. And it doesn't mater if it still has that "fresh of the press" smell or worn pages turned by so many hands, it is a piece of art for me, something I admire and respect. But let's face it, in our busy life schedules these days sometimes it's quite hard to squeeze in a peaceful moment for a good read. Also since I love to take books from libraries, I just can't manage to read a book before it has to be taken back to the library.
One ordinary day while I was retouching photos (have a lot of these days, especially during the wedding season) and listening to music as always, I found my mind wandering as it often does in situations like that. It got me thinking. This mind wandering didn't seemed to impact my work at all, it was like a part of my brain was doing the work and the rest of it was just well... bored. Then I remembered this interesting video I saw few days before that (link here, by the way i strongly recommend this channel for anybody who has a curious mind) it was about being "spaced out" and how certain routine task makes our brain go on autopilot. So it got me thinking on how I could spend this time doing something more useful than just listening to music and thinking about random things. Listening seemed to be a good match and so the audio book came in mind. At first I was not sure if I could manage to properly concentrate on the story and still do the photoshop'ing at the same time. I tried it the same day and it worked perfectly! It was kind of surprising how engaged in the book story I got and still the retouching went on smoothly. Even the work itself seemed less tiring and went on quicker. This was so exiting I still can't get over it, I know it might seem silly to some but for someone who newer listened to an audio book before it was wonderful.
And so it brings us to the "universe" part of this story. The audio book I listened was by C.S.Lewis and it was the third book of the "Space Trilogy" called "That Hideous Strength". I chose this book for quite an obvious reason, I have read the other two books before and I really liked them (I'm a Sci-Fi fan), I also intended to read the third one, took it from the library, but managed to read just one chapter before my busiest time of the year (summer) came and my reading suffered from the unfortunate time lack. So I had to take the book back before finishing it. So when choosing what to listen it was no brainer. The trilogy as it is obvious from the title is about space but in a different sense, more in a spiritual rather science way. It made me think a lot about the universe and how incomprehensive it still is to us. I was always fascinated by astronomy and I love the images of the universe both the real photos and the illustrations that artist have imagined.
For a little inspiration of the cosmos here is a color palette I made from this gorgeous picture of a nebula and some awesome space inspired stuff you can get on Etsy.
